Mindset: What It Is and How It Changes

Mindset is the established stance a person takes toward difficulty, feedback and uncertainty. It is produced by underlying beliefs and reinforced by repeated behaviour, which is why it changes through practice rather than persuasion.

What does mindset actually mean?

Mindset describes the default interpretation a person brings to a situation — particularly a situation that is uncertain, unflattering, or difficult. It is a pattern of response, not a mood.

Two people receiving identical feedback can respond entirely differently: one treats it as information, the other as a verdict. Neither is choosing that reaction consciously in the moment. That difference is mindset.

How do you change your mindset?

By changing what gets rehearsed. Mindset is downstream of beliefs and behaviour, so it moves when those move — which means the work is practical rather than motivational.

In practice: identify the interpretation you default to under pressure, name the belief that produces it, and deliberately practise a different response in the situations where the default usually runs.

What is an abundance mindset?

An abundance mindset is the stance that opportunity, credit and resources are not strictly finite — that another person's success does not automatically reduce what is available to you.

It matters because of what it changes behaviourally: people operating from scarcity tend to withhold information, avoid collaboration, and protect position. Those behaviours reliably reduce the opportunities available to them, which then confirms the original assumption.

Is mindset the same as positive thinking?

No. Positive thinking is a chosen tone; mindset is an established pattern of interpretation. A person can maintain a positive tone while operating from a deeply defensive mindset.

Confusing the two is why mindset advice often fails: the tone is adjusted while the interpretation underneath stays exactly as it was.
